Pilar Bobadilla Ugarte
I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Biotechnological Engineering at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, and later pursued my master’s degree in biotechnology with a specialization in Cellular and Molecular Biology at Wageningen University, where I also completed my PhD at the Department of Biochemistry under the supervision of Dr. Daan Swarts. There, I studied prokaryotic Argonaute (pAgo) proteins using biochemical, biological, and structural approaches, including their collaboration with accessory proteins to defend against mobile genetic elements such as viruses and plasmids.
I am currently a Research Technician in the Microbial Immunity group at the Department of Cell and Chemical Biology at LUMC. Bacteria and bacteriophages are in a constant evolutionary battle, each continuously developing new molecular strategies to overcome the other — and I find it incredible how much there still is to uncover about their molecular mechanisms.
