The process of epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) in cancer cells has been associated with increased ability to metastasize and therapy resistance. How epithelial cells retain their epithelial traits and prevent malignant transformation is not well understood.

Researchers of the Department of Cell and Chemical Biology at Leiden University Medical Center have discovered a Long non coding RNA (LncRNA) that acts a gatekeeper for epithelial state of normal and cancer cells and that inhibits TGF-beta-induced epithelial to mesenchymal transition of breast and lung cancer cells.
