We have written a review about recent advances in cryo electron tomography for biology and medicine. It is a follow up of our earlier review from 2009 (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.aanat.2009.04.003). We describe the basics and the advances in cryo electron tomography. The introduction of phase plates, direct electron detectors, dedicated cryo EM hardware and software allowing automated data collection and reconstruction, have increased the posibilities of cryo ET dramatically.
