Dr. Stuart Howes
Stuart completed his BSc and MSc at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (2001-2007, Massachusetts, USA) in Biomedical Engineering, before joining the start-up company, Quanterix, in Cambridge, MA. After two and a half years working, he decided to return to school to complete his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley (2009-2015). In the group of Eva Nogales, he used cryo-EM to study microtubules and microtubule associated proteins at near atomic resolution. Specifically, he studied the differences between yeast and mammalian microtubules, as well as engineered kinesins and PRC1, a protein that crosslinks microtubules to each other.
Stuart joined the Koster group in March 2016 to investigate antibody oligomerization on liposome surfaces. These relatively small and flexible proteins necessitated using state-of-the-art hardware at the Netherlands Centre for Nanoscopy (NeCEN, https://www.necen.nl/). Stuart has collected tomograms where the individual domains of antibodies are directly visualized. This work lead to studies of C1, the initiation complex of the innate immune system, bound to these antibodies.
Currently he is working at Utrecht University.
