Technician

To investigate the epicardium we look into epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). For this we use human primary material from which I isolate epicardial-derived cells. I make sure these cells are characterized and are reliable to work with. We use the epicardial cells for e.g. a high-throughput screen, or for transplantation in vivo. I have also worked with many other cell cultures models including a flow culture system. Besides this I’m also lab manager for an ML I and ML II lab. As a biotechnician I apply in vivo models for cardiac disease (heart attack and heart failure), and I perform and analyze ultrasounds to measure cardiac function.
I studied Biology and Medical Laboratory Research at the University of Applied Sciences in Leiden, the Netherlands. My first job as a technician was at the AMC in the laboratory for Experimental Oncology and Radiobiology. Here I worked on a project with (colon) cancer stem cells for which I mainly did the primary cell culture, in vivo work, and biobanking. Now I work at the LUMC in the lab of professor Goumans in the group of Anke Smits which revolves around the role of epicardium in endogenous cardiac repair.
