Oncolytic viruses are promising therapeutic agents in the field of cancer therapy. Mammalian reovirus T3D and human adenovirus type 5 are potent members of this new treatment category. Clinical trials have demonstrated the safety of this new concept, however pre-clinical and clinical research also illuminated several obstacles that thwart the efficacy of oncolytic virotherapy. In the oncolytic virus research group of Rob Hoeben my personal research projects aim at developing new oncolytic adenoviruses to be used in mouse models employing a forward genetics strategy and I search for methods to improve the tissue penetration capacity of reoviruses and adenoviruses using a non-oncolytic viral vector (baculovirus) as a tool.
After obtaining my Master’s degree in Medical Biotechnology from Wageningen University, I started as a PhD student in the Virus and Stem Cell Biology (VSB) research group of professor Rob Hoeben. From 2014 onward, I worked outside the LUMC for different companies including the GMP-certified analytical services provider Eurofins|MicroSafe laboratories in Leiden, where I coordinated virology/biotechnology-related projects for (bio)medical companies. In 2017 I returned to the research group of Rob Hoeben at the CCB department, continuing the research on improving oncolytic reoviruses and adenoviruses using forward and reverse genetics methods. This work culminated in the defence of my PhD dissertation in June 2018, after which I continued as a postdoctoral researcher in the VSB section of the CCB department.
