About the Vertegaal lab

We are interested in unraveling and exploiting signaling by ubiquitin and SUMO, a ubiquitin-like modification predominantly found in nuclei of proliferating cells. We employ state-of-the-art mass spectrometry methods to probe post-translational modifications of proteins, with a focus on SUMO and ubiquitin. Using the vast amount of data obtained from mass spectrometry experiments we pinpoint interesting targets and carry out functional analysis using enzymatic in-vitro experiments, protein-protein interaction assays or advanced microscopy. Finally, we translate our findings of molecular actions in relevant mouse models with the aim to forward our knowledge to clinical practice.
