Research:

As an organic chemist I like to synthesize molecules and understand their interaction in biological processes. During my masters I did various projects including synthesizing covalent irreversible inhibitors for the enzyme CD38, and producing various analogues of the antibiotic Bacitracin A, thereby increasing its antibiotic activity. At the CCB Chemical Biology & Drug discovery group I research the chemical interplay between two post-translational modifications (PTMs), ADP-ribosylation and ubiquitination, which play a crucial role in for instance Legionnaires Disease. With the creation of chemical tools like activity-based probes, I can assess this interplay and dive into the biological mechanisms still unknown.

 

Curriculum Vitae:

I studied Molecular Science&Technology at the University of Leiden and the Technical University of Delft (BSc) and Chemistry (MSc) at the University of Leiden and obtained my MSc degree in 2021. In 2019 I joined the Bio-organic Synthesis group of the Leiden Institute of Chemistry to work on the synthesis of irreversible covalent inhibitors for enzyme CD38. Afterwards I performed a second smaller internship at the Institute of Biology Leiden where I produced various analogues of the antibiotic Bacitracin A and elevated its antibiotic activity, using solid phase peptide synthesis. In November 2021 I started as a PhD student under the supervision of Gerbrand van der Heden van Noort, where I investigate the interaction between ADP-ribose and ubiquitin, using various chemical tools.
