Research
As an organic chemist I like to synthesize new molecules to modulate biochemical processes. I like the interplay between both, synthesizing and applying molecules in order to understand the underlying biology. During my Master’s at the Leiden University Institute of Chemistry I’ve worked on the development of a synthetic methodology to incorporate trans-cyclooctene modified amino acids into peptides using solid phase peptide synthesis. We’ve tried to gain control over the T-cell activation by masking and unmasking the crucial amine in epitope recognition. Within CCB I am expanding my interest towards the interplay between two post-translational modifications (PTMs) 1) ADPr and 2) ubiquitination, developing synthetic tools to examine the interesting underlaying biology. The interplay between these PTMs has for instance a role in legionnaires disease.
CV
I studied Biopharmaceutical Sciences (BSc) and Chemistry (MSc) at the University of Leiden and obtained by MSc degree in July 2019, cum laude. During my Bachelor’s internship at the LACDR and Master’s at Biosyn, I’ve been trained as an organic chemist in peptide and small molecule synthesis. I was mainly focused on the synthesis of trans-cyclooctenes and installed them in small epitopes to modulate the immune response. In December 2019, I joined the lab of Huib Ovaa to work under the supervision of Gerbrand van der Heden van Noort, where I work on the development of synthetic tools to study the crosslink between ADPr and ubiquitin. Besides organic chemistry I am now expanding my interest, validating and examining the biochemical application of the molecules I’ve synthesized on for instance legionella effector proteins.
